Taking the mystery out of GALFER brake pad compounds...
Some dealers offer one compound of pads, but here at Black Dog Cycle Works, we know that different customer and different needs. Our strategy is to educate our customers to let them know what is available so they can make the choice that best fits there riding style. While this wealth of information can be a bit overwhelming at times, we want out customers to get the most out of their purchases and be happy with the performance choices. To that end, we present the following information for your benefit.
I have been using Galfer rotors and pads for over a year now and have been very happy with them in every way. As a dealer, the only thing I have found frustrating is getting their various compounds "straight" - I think I have finally nailed it down and want to share what I have found. I am primarily focused on the pads available for the KTM 950 & 990s but this information applies to all their models.
To start off with, the following compounds are available from Galfer:

Front FD172 pads - 1054 / 1370 / 1651 compounds

Carbon semi-metallic based compound (GG friction rating)
The 1054 ("black") compound is the work horse of our brake pad family. It offers progressive feel and feed back and is GG rated which makes it a great street brake pad. This compound is available in front and rear calipers. Use this compound if you commute to work, ride light trails or woods or "just need some brake pads". Applications range from street, ATV, dirt bike and cruisers. This compound is so versatile, many Karts use it as a race compound!

Dual Sport |
Organic / Kevlar (GG friction rating)
"Green pad" (formerly 1532) , Kevlar base with organic materials (Ceramic and Carbon). It is for sportbike, racing, Moto-x, and Enduro. Softer Pad, easier on the rotors. Kevlar material reduces fading. Withstands abrupt temperature changes. This was originally a race compound. Good initial bite and response (does not take time to warm up). Good feedback and modulation. Less life because softer compound.
OUR HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION FOR ADVENTURES & SUPER ENDUROS!

1370 |

Sintered bronze based ceramic compound (HH friction rating)
This compound is our 1375 compound on a diet. It has all the great features of the G1375 compound with the exception of the ceramic coated backing plate. Looking for that perfect brake pad to do those canyon runs? This is it! Very easy on the discs and great heat recovery. This compound is avaible for most Supersport and Superbike from calipers (600cc - 1000cc)

Race |
Sintered bronze based ceramic compound with ceramic coated backing plate prevents heat exchange to caliper (HH+ rated)
The 1375 compound is the result of many long days at the race track and on the brake dyno. Based on Advanced Ceramics, this compound is meant for the track. It offers very fast heat recovery for more consistant braking which in turn, gives the rider more "feel". This is the pad of choice for most racers at the top of club levels and AMA contenders. These pads are very easy on rotors since they do not have the same levels of metallics in them like many OEM and after market brands. The 1375 compound also features a ceramic coated back plate which helps to disapate heat away from the brake pad and reduces the amount of heat transfered into the caliper pistons. This gives you a cooler running system that will be able to withstand more heating cycles and deiver consistant braking. Available for front calipers Supersport and Superbike applications (600cc - 1000cc)

Off-Road |
Sintered bronze based ceramic compound
This compound works well in mud and is easy on discs.
Advanced sintered ceramic compound. Based on bronze, iron, and ceramic materials. Ready to withstand higher temperatures than regular semi metallic carbon brake pads. Off-road applications, Moto X, and enduro. Developed specifically with the most difficult conditions in mind (mud, dust, humidity) Very aggressive pad. Good initial bite, great lasting power. Doesn't wear rotors as fast. Dissipates heat quicker. Better feel, and lasts as long as full metal pads.
